Dr. Gina, WHY are you leaving Primary Care?

I am profoundly filled with gratitude and appreciation as I think about these past 17 years as a Primary Care Physician at Los Altos. You, my patient, have been part of my growth journey every bit as much as I have been of yours. You have taught me things that are not found in any textbook or classroom. For that, I will be eternally grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Meanwhile, outside of the clinic, I watched my ex-husband (and dear friend) battle Stage 4 cancer for 16 remarkable years prior to succumbing to the disease this past Christmas. I share this with love, empowerment, and hope, for he is the one that opened my eyes to what it means to heal beyond what is taught in medical school, and by blending conventional and integrative therapies, he survived far beyond what was predicted at diagnosis.

Through his journey (and later my own journey), I came to realize that pharmaceuticals and technology are but a small piece of what it means to truly thrive. More than ever, there is a message that I wish to invite the world to hear. Let’s remember what it means to be empowered in our own health.  Let’s recall the wisdom of our ancestors, who survived for thousands of years on plant medicine.  Let’s recognize that we are energetic beings, and our spirit is as much a part of our vitality as is our breath and heart beat. Let’s awaken to the reality that we can only be as healthy as our planet and environment around us.  It is the renewal of these truths that I wish to bring to the wider community, both in cultivating optimal wellness and treating ailments.  This is the essence of Integrative Medicine.  This is my calling, my joy, and my passion.  Thank you for honoring this part of me.

What is Integrative Medicine? What is Functional Medicine?

Integrative Medicine is the study and inclusion of all factors that influence health and disease, including lifestyle, mind, spirit, environment, and ancestry. It is the conscious choice to explore all options (conventional, natural and energetic) in supporting the body’s innate ability to heal.

I am also certified in Functional Medicine.  Functional Medicine is the study of the “macro” (lifestyle, nutrition/supplements, environment/toxins, biography/trauma, mindset/spirituality) and its effect on the “micro” (genetic expression, mitochondrial health, cellular resilience, gut microbiome, etc).  This information is used to tailor personalized treatment regimens, combining modern and ancient therapies in the pursuit of mind-body-spirit vitality and wellness.

In addition to harnessing traditional wisdom and clinical experience, these overlapping specialties embrace a science-based and evidence-informed philosophy in the use of any prescribed treatment.

Neither of these rejects conventional medicine.  Rather, they invite the inclusion of a wider lens through which we see what it means to heal.  My personal style is to delve quite deeply into psychological, emotional, ancestral, and spiritual history, as that gives clues to the root cause of most ailments expressed in the physical plane.

What type of patients are usually seen in Integrative Medicine?

Most patients who seek Integrative Medicine generally have a chronic condition where their conventional treatment plan has not been met with satisfactory results and they are seeking another paradigm.  Examples include: any chronic illness, metabolic imbalance, post-infectious debility, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, cancer, migraines, hormone imbalance, irritable bowel syndrome, neuropathy, autism, mood imbalance, mold illness, toxin exposure, autoimmune disease, dysautonomia, medically unexplained symptoms, etc.  However, any and all patients who are motivated, interested and empowered in their health are welcome in Integrative Medicine.

Where will you be practicing?

Beginning September 2021, I will be engaging in a referral-based Integrative Medicine consultation practice via the Sutter PAMF Integrative Medicine Department. This is based in San Carlos, although I will be maintaining a fully virtual practice for the foreseeable future.

Can I still see you?

The Integrative Medicine Department is not Primary Care. I promise that you will love your new PCP as much as I do, and I encourage you to establish a strong relationship with her at your next Physical Exam or appointment. The reality is that I have been practicing Integrative Medicine at each of our visits for the past 5 years, and taking a look at your last few After Visit Summaries will remind you of what we discussed -- possibly adding a few more organic veggies to your diet, or getting creative with exercise, or starting a meditation practice, or seeking your joy.

Integrative Consults (referral required) are generally for a specific problem. Think of this like any other specialty referral, like the Neurologist. Patients are usually seen once or twice for an issue, and then return to their PCP after that. It is much more likely (and hopeful) that I see you in an upcoming Integrative Medicine Shared Medical Appointment (SMA). These are dynamic group visits for common interests such as the integrative management of anxiety/depression, high blood pressure & cholesterol, dementia prevention, cancer prevention, life-after-cancer, enhancing lifespan, etc. These are all future-planned SMAs and the best way to stay informed is by signing up on my email list. Hope to see you at a future SMA!

Will you still send helpful newsletters? Can you let me know if you do any more conferences or webinars? Can we stay connected?!?

YES, YES and YES! The future is unwritten, and as my journey evolves, I invite you to come along for the ride and stay connected.  There are newsletters, conferences, webinars, retreats and books in the future and I would love for you to be part of all of them.

The best way to stay informed is via my email list -- please sign up below if you have not done so already! Unfortunately, once I am no longer your PCP, I will be unable to send updates via MyHealthOnline.

Are you on social media?

The Covid-19 pandemic inspired me to use the social media platform to spread empowering information about research and supplements as it evolved (and is still evolving). Recently, it has been a creative outlet for me, as I post mind/body/spirit/supplement tips. You can find me @ginaserraioccoMD on Instagram and Facebook. However, signing up using the form below is really the best way to stay connected. I commit to infrequent emails, no spam, absolute privacy and easy unsubscribe (though you won’t want to)!

This is not good-bye. We are all connected in this human experience and I wish you endless vitality and abundance in your future. May you always remember that what you seek is already within you.

Stay empowered.
Stay connected to your truth.
Give yourself permission to find your joy.

Be well,
Dr. Gina
